Cacao berry smoothie is the perfect way to satisfy a sweet tooth


If you’re like me, every so often (who am I kidding? It’s every other day) the urge to have chocolate takes hold in that “must-have-it-now” way. The scent of it wafting through the air from a nearby bakery or just mere mention of the word sets the craving in motion. Mmmm. However, after losing 70 pounds seven years ago, I’ve managed to stay away from sugary excess, swapping glazed donuts the size of a small car for things like almond milk, coconut oil, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Health, as Raw and Natural Health readers know, is about putting good into our bodies so that we achieve harmony with our personal lifestyle needs and preferences. Along my journey, I’ve happily discovered that I can still fulfill my sweet cravings without sacrificing my good health. How? Three words: cacao berry smoothie, better summed up as, “yum!”

How to make the cacao berry smoothie

It takes only a few ingredients and the same about of minutes to make this tasty cacao berry smoothie, which I came across at

Farro and cucumber salad recipe


  • 4 cups water
  • 10 ounces farro (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 pound tomatoes, seeded and chopped
  • 1 cucumber, chopped
  • 1/2 red bell pepper
  • Vinaigrette:
  • 1 large garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 2 teaspoons salt (I go light; it's just my preference)
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil


  1. Boil the farro and water in a saucepan.
  2. Then reduce heat and simmer on low for about 30 minutes.
  3. I used the simmering time to chop and prepare the rest of the ingredients, including making the vinaigrette.
  4. To make the vinaigrette, simply combine the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk.
  5. After 30 minutes, drain the farro (make sure it's tender, but not too soft) and transfer to another bowl.
  6. Mix the remainder of the ingredients and vinaigrette in the farro.
  7. Enjoy either at room temperature or after its been in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.

The refreshing fusion of cacao powder and berries is the perfect way to satisfy chocolate cravings. It’s healthy, delicious and easy to make. What else could you ask for?

Is carob powder good for you?

Us women love our chocolate don’t we!?

Heck, even men lust over chocolate, but it isn’t quite the same loving reaction as it is for women in most cases it seems.

Drop harmful chocolate, or replace it?

In a quest to cure herself from psoriasis my cousin decided to go on a raw vegan diet. Overnight!

Her logic was to drop all unhealthy foods and eat ONLY the things she knew would benefit her health, just until the skin issues disappeared. Then she would re-introduce foods one at a time testing her bodies reaction to each one on an empty stomach before including them back into her regular diet. That was the plan.

But she also learned, based on personal research, that clinging to her dairy dessert chocolate fix may have been the very thing that contributed to her skin issue continuing to thrive.

She confessed what she considered a “failed attempt at healing” with a group of us one day at lunch. That’s when a mutual friend told her the following:

Carob is a great source of fiber, is high in protein and phytonutrients. It is lower in fat, calories and caffeine than chocolate as well.

So, if your intention is to eliminate dairy and eliminate the ugly side of the chocolate love addiction, carob may be a good choice for you.
